The sixth-century Mar Elias (St. Elijah) Monastery, on the road from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, marks the traditional site where Elijah rested on his flight from the vengeance of Jezebel (1 kings 19). From the monastery is a beautiful view of Bethlehem, the Judean Desert, Herodium, and sometimes the Dead Sea and the Mountains of Moab.
