Information and Review of the The Four Sephardic Synagogues

Four restored synagogues in the heart of Jerusalem’s Jewish Quarter.

Built under Muslim rule when synagogues were required to keep a low profile, the complex is practically invisible as a synagogue from street level and is reached by descending a staircase.

In the past, the ceremony appointing the Sephardic chief rabbi used to take place at the main, most magnificent synagogue, named after Rabbi Yohanan Ben Zakai.

The synagogues were restored after the 1967 reunification of Jerusalem giving new life to ritual objects from Jewish communities in Italy decimated in the Holocaust.
