What to do in “Hanita”, Israel

Hanita was an ancient Jewish settlement of the tribe of Asher. Kibbutz Hanita, in the western Upper Galilee, was established using the settlement method “Homa u’migdal” (Tower and Stockade method).

These settlements were fortified points that rose over one night to demonstrate a Jewish presence in the area and quickly. Hanita’s occupation of the land during that period (the 1930’s) became a symbol of pioneering heroism, especially since the kibbutz was established in the heart of a hostile Arab region and at the height of the British revolt in 1938. The courageous move made a strong impression on the Jewish community.

The events that accompanied the establishment of the kibbutz are documented in the Museum of the Tower and Stockade in Hanita, with models and photographs of the 56 settlements that were established in this manner, alongside archaeological exhibits that were discovered in and around the kibbutz.

Events & Attractions:
The Hanita Museum is located in the stone house that was already in Upper Hanita on the day of the Aliyah. The museum has a display of artifacts and documents from the period of the tower and stockade, Hebrew decorations and a display of archaeological finds that were discovered there mainly mosaic floors. Especially famous is the “geometric mosaic” which is unique in Israel. A film about the Aliyah to Hanita is also screened as part of the visit.

In Lower Hanita, which is located in the heart of the Hanita forest west of the kibbutz, there is a reconstruction of a tower and stockade.

Every year in late December, the Galilee is decorated for Christmas and Hanukkah. The Zman Galil Organization holds the Winter Festival – which includes a glass workshop in Hanita.
