What to do in “Maghar”, Israel

Maghar is a local council in the northern district of Israel. It was declared a local council in 1956. Mughar lies east of Carmiel on the border between the Lower Galilee and the Upper Galilee and is inhabited by Druze, Arab Christians and Muslims.

The village of Maghar, located on the slopes of Mt. Hazon (Jebel Hazor), was established 3,000 years ago and is located at an elevation of 354 meters above sea level. The village overlooks the Sea of Galilee and the Ginosar Valley to the east, and the Karnei Khittim (the Table) to the south.

It is possible that this is the village that was named during the Roman period and the Byzantine period in the name of its cities, perhaps because of large number of caves in it.

Events & Attractions:

There are two sacred jujube trees in the village, one holy to Muslims and the other to the Druze, one on top of a hill and one on the edge of the mountain, and legend says that one grew out of the other, even though they are 800m apart.

The sacred Muslim tree can be found next to the northern mosque. The Druze tree was a community center of the old days including Druze gatherings from Al-Asad, Marama, Masjur, and Maghar whose representatives sat down to discuss the community business on the way to the pilgrimage to the tomb of Nebi Shu’ayeb.

Every year the olive branch festival takes place in the village. As part of the “Kfar Bikartem,” event, the village of Maghar hosts the general public for a weekend where you will discover the secret of the olive oil along Nahal Zalmon and its effect on the taste of the oil.
