This Russian Orthodox church on the Mount of Olives was built in 1895 by Czar Alexander III in memory of his mother Maria Alexandrovna, and named for her patron saint, Mary Magdalene.
With its seven magnificent golden onion-top domes in the style of Moscow’s sixteenth-century churches, this is one of Jerusalem’s best-known landmarks. The church is also the burial place of Righteous Gentile Princess Alice of Greece, Prince Charles paternal grandmother.
Its beautiful garden frames a breathtaking view of the Golden Gate in the Old City walls.
