Information and Review of the Rachel’s Tomb

The tomb of the biblical matriarch Rachel is located at the northern entrance of Bethlehem, around 300 meters south of Jerusalem’s Gilo neighborhood.

The Bible says Jacob buried Rachel on the road to Bethlehem after she died giving birth to Benjamin. Travelers and pilgrims have been describing the tomb since the fourth century CE. In 1841 Sir Moses Montefiore refurbished and expanded the tomb into the structure we know today, with its famous dome. Many Jews visit the tomb, especially on the anniversary of the matriarchs death 11 Cheshvan (October).
