For centuries, Jews have streamed to the Tomb of King David on Mount Zion in Jerusalem to pray, recite David’s Psalms and pay homage to the ancestor of the Messiah and founder of Jerusalem as the united capital of the Israelite tribes.
The tomb is covered with a velvet cloth embroidered with the words David Melech Israel Hai Vekayam, the first Hebrew song many Jewish children learn, which evokes the sense that David’s spirit abides with us.
Crowds increase on Shavu’ot (Pentecost), the anniversary of David’s death.
