Information and Review of the Tabgha

Tabgha, on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, is best known for one of the miracles of Christ, the multiplication of bread loaves and fish that fed a multitude.

The Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fish was established on the ruins of an ancient church from the 4th century. The premises feature Byzantine mosaics that are amongst the best in the Holy Land. Floor decorations depict local flora and fauna, such as peacocks, geese and swans, set amongst lotus flowers and oleanders. The best known floor mosaic is located near the altar, portraying the eponymous miracle, with a basket of bread loaves between a pair of Galilee mullets.

The nearby Church of the Primacy of St. Peter commemorates the third appearance of Jesus to his disciples, chronicled in the Gospel of John, chapter 21. After his resurrection, Jesus appeared on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, causing the empty nets of his disciples to be filled with 153 fish. Jesus then cooked the fish on a coal fire, and reconciled Peter to him. The chapel was established on the rock where the fire was lit, according to tradition.
