Zahir al-Umar, ruler of the Galilee during the 18th century, constructed the walls around the city of Tiberias, and so delineated the bounds of the city. Since then, the fort and structures inside the walls were damaged several times in earthquakes, and their remains stand to this day, considered to be amongst the most prominent symbols of Tiberias.
