What to do in “Kfar Nakhum”, Israel

Kfar Nahum was a settlement on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, not far from Chorazim, in the Valley of Ein Sheva. It was a Jewish settlement in the Byzantine period. It serves as a national park covering an area of 425 acres.

Kfar Nahum, which is located on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, is one of the most sacred and important sites of Christianity, and it is a pilgrimage site for many pilgrims who arrive from around the world.

According to the New Testament, Jesus established the center of his activity in Kfar Nahum, and some of the twelve apostles lived there. Jesus envisioned the fate of Sodom, Kfar Nahum, and the nearby Chorazim their fate of being ruined. The two towns attract many Christian pilgrims, who come to see for themselves the fulfillment of this prophecy.

Events & Attractions:

The main site in Kfar Nahum is a synagogue dating from the 4th century CE, one of the most magnificent synagogues in Israel. The synagogue has a large prayer hall, a paved courtyard surrounded by a tall pillar, and carved stones. Two fascinating items were found on the site, including a Holy Ark and a candelabra carved on top of a stone headstone and two ancient inscriptions.

Parts of the ancient village of Kfar Nahum were exposed near the synagogue, including basalt structures and an array of alleys. South of the synagogue, an octagonal church from the Byzantine period was exposed, below which were the remains of a building which the Christian tradition identifies as the house of Saint Peter.

In Kfar Nahum there is also an outstanding Greek Orthodox church. The church is white and clean, with bright red domes on it. There is also a Catholic church, which is on eight columns above the Church of the House of Saint Peter.
