Elijah’s Cave in Haifa brings visitors both the sanctity of a Jewish holy place and the coexistence traditions for which Haifa is famous. The cave is accessed by a staircase off Allenby Street in lower Haifa, Tradition says Elijah came to pray here before calling down fire from heaven.
The cave, where Jews now come for family celebrations and prayer, has also been to Christians and Muslims. One the walls has ancient Greek inscriptions, one in Hebrew, and two seven-branched candelabra.
